What Exactly Is a Website?

website is a place on the internet that has a specific domain name, also known as the URL of the website. It can also have a sub-domain name associated with it. A sub-domain name is like a separate website, but still associated with your domain. It usually appears in front of the domain, followed by a dot (.), and the domain name like this: subdomain.yourdomain.com

Websites can contain as little as 1 file, or an unlimited amount, depending on what type of hosting plan you purchased. Hosting providers will usually provide you with several different plans to meet the needs of your website. If you have a large amount of files, and a large amount of traffic coming, then you might need an unlimited plan that provides you with as much bandwidth as you need.

Your Files

The files that you create are your webpages. These need to be created using a computer language known as HTML. HTML tells the browsers how to display your file, or webpage on the computer screen when someone views it.

You basically have 2 options when it comes to creating your webpages. One option, and probably the most difficult one is to learn HTML, CSS and other computer languages and create the pages from scratch.

Another way is to buy a program called Dreamweaver and it will create the pages for you without you having to know any HTML. However, as with any program you will have to learn how to use Dreamweaver in order to make the most out of it.

You can create as many webpages as you like, and the more you have the larger your website is, and the better it will do in the search engines.

Why Create a Website?

Websites are very cheap and easy to maintain once you get the hang of it, and the amount of money that you can make with them is unlimited. If you know how to market, then you will be able to get tons of visitors or potential customers coming to your website everyday to make purchases.

If you already have an offline business, then you could easily take your business online and skyrocket your sales. Plus, you can use a website to keep your customers informed of important policies, new products and so on. A website is also a great place for you to display positive reviews that your customers left you on your products.

There are many more reasons why you should set up your own website, but basically you would do so to either share information, or make money online.
